Accused witches were often older and marginalised women, who were treated unfairly and often humiliated. The name “scolds” was used for women who dared to be assertive and stand their ground. Being angry, even after mistreatment, could turn into a witchcraft accusation for many women, helping to perpetrate the stereotype of the “good woman” as quiet and submitted.
