Erratics

“Erratics” is a body of work consisting of digital photo-collages and a sound composition of field recordings. Created in Svalbard, Norway, “Erratics” considers change and transformation through the lens of geological processes, resource extraction, and the effects of climate change through glacial melt and permafrost fluctuations in the tundra. Sites for photographic and sound recordings include coal mines, Longyearbreen Glacier, geological research stations, the coal port, Isdammen, Endalen, and along the coastline and valleys around Longyearbyen. The term “erratic” refers to glacial erratics - large boulders that have been moved by glacial ice that has since melted, leaving only a rock that is out of place with its surroundings as a hint of the geological transformations, processes and change that took place there.
